Koh Samui is located in the Surat Thani Province of Thailand and is one of the islands of the province. There’s also Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Koh Taen and Koh Lamphu. You can get to Koh Samui simply but of course, I’m going to recommend the cheapest way.
Traveling within Thailand is super simple and easy so if you’re afraid due to language barrier there’s no need. Most of the time, the natives know you’re looking for the direction of the place or the station you need to go to if you say the city.
Getting to Koh Samui
You have two main forms of transportation you can take: train or airplane.
When you take an airplane, you have the option of taking a direct flight to Koh Samui. There’s one airport on the island and it’s a little over an hour. You’ll most likely be flying out of Bangkok’s older airport, Don Muang, since loads of their domestic flights are from there – at least from my experience. This is a good idea if you don’t mind dropping $250+ but I was so not about that life so I chose this next option.
Flight to Surat Thani Airport, Bus and Ferry
For those of you who want to save money but still want to move as quickly as possible, this one is for you. From Bangkok you can book a direct flight to Surat Thani, the province that the island is located.
Bus and ferry tickets are usually sold together and you can get them when you arrive at Surat Thani Airport. There’s kiosk of the companies, Raja Ferry, Lomprayah and Phantip, that sell the tickets but you’ll have to see if they have tickets available for the time you want to depart from the airport. You can also buy your tickets beforehand online.
Tip: If you want to arrive to Koh Samui early, leave from Bangkok as early as possible. This can take up to three hours to reach the island.
Train to Surat Thani Train Station, Bus and Ferry
Similar to taking a flight, you can take a train the goes from Bangkok to Surat Thani Train Station. Since it can be up to a twelve hour ride, it’s best if you take an overnight train where you get to sleep on the way there.
When you arrive to the train station, there will also be kiosks there where you can buy your tickets just like at the airport.
